We have plans to make more than one visual jazz opera. This is the time where things get very exciting. We are now reaching out to the visual artists. We need to tell our stories with both audio and visual effects. This photo was taken when I was conducting some of the research for this project in Boston.
Bob Barboza spent the summer training Kids Talk Radio Student Backpack Journalists to report the news for the city of Long Beach, California. Each student represented a city council area in the city. This team worked on special projects dealing with reducing gang violence. We are now integrating some of this work into our visual jazz operas. This is an attempt to reach our youth through iPhones, iPads and the Internet.
What goes into the making of a visual jazz opera?
Bob had an opportunity to travel to Japan to test different drums for his upcoming visual jazz operas. He has a very rich sample collection and has new stories about early life in Japan. Some of these sounds will be included in his early man visual jazz opera.
Jon is one of the most creative jazz musicians in Los Angeles. He is perfect for the visual jazz opera series and he is a master at playing the right sound effects at the right time. He studied music with Bob Barboza at Los Angeles City College. Jon received his music degree from UCLA and he played with Ike & Tina Turner, Dee Dee Bridgewater & the Staple Singers.
Andy is the voice of the Kids Talk Radio Mayan Visual Jazz Opera. He is an actor, singer and a musician. He does all the voiceover work for the high priest, Jaguar Boy, and the chief storyteller. All of his scripts are on the iPad. He is scheduled to play the part of a Spanish explorer in the Mayan Visual Jazz Opera II.
We have asked Ronnie Ciago to play electronic drums in odd time signatures to support our visual jazz operas. Ronnie grew up in New York and his father was a jazz musician. He has lots of experience playing different styles of music. He was a member of our “Super Sub Project” and now has lots of experience working with K-12 students. He did a wonderful job when we played at the Green Dot Charter School.
Jane Barboza plays classical and jazz flute along with Jon Hartmann (piano), Bob Barboza (bass), and Ronnie Ciago Drums. This photo was taken after a Cabo Verde & Brazilian Jazz Concert in downtown Long Beach, California. The group went by the Long Beach Jazz Messengers and later switch to support all of the Kids Talk Radio jazz projects.
